Is Subnautica Worth It?

Posted by Elle-B-Ozo - 4 days ago

My brother and I were considering getting the game on our old-ass Xbox, and I was wondering if it's worth it. From what I've seen from gameplay videos and reviews, it seems really good, but I'm a little hesitant on account of being broke as hell (I should NOT have spent all that money on FFXV. I love Prompto but that price tag nearly sunk me). This probably won't get any comments or traction, but I just wanted to know how people felt about the game in general.

Also thank you guys so much for 50 followers! it might not seem like much, but it means a lot to me ;)

I cannot 'play' that game (or the sequel/spin-off) for personal reasons, but I still had a good time watching others Let's Play it. Twice. :)
(Also: I will be talking about the PC version. I do not know how the Xbox version holds up.)

Still, it's hard to tell whether 'Subnautica' will be worth it 'for you' without knowing anything about your taste in games. But...
You know those sandbox games that have been flooding the PC market for years? 'Subnautica' is 'that, but in _good_' - and with a good story you can care about. The exploration aspect is the real deal. If you like exploration games and building "bases" in sandbox games, then this game is for you. The only thing that's annoying about it would be that you have to spend a fair bit of time gathering resources - especially if you want your base to be fancy. The game has no multiplayer, though, so you and your brother would essentially have to take turns. Depending on your living situation that means: Looking over the other one's shoulder while he does boring resource gathering runs and listening in on mayor spoilers. If you can share and play the game together that's great, but it might not always be that easy, so I thought I'd mention it.

If you are looking for 'the best value proposition', you should get an 'Xbox Ultimate', though. Otherwise known as "a PC". A PC that's older than a decade and runs on Windows 7 will still be able to play almost anything worth playing today - plus tons and tons of free games from itch.io. And speaking of itch.io: I donated a total of 40 dollars to 2 charity bundles and I own around 3,000 games now. Not all of them 'good', but I had more fun with the games from those bundles that I 'did like' than I had with handpicked games bought for 100 dollars during sales from gog.com.
Also: Emulation exists. You could play some of the best (console exclusive) games of all time without having to check if they are available for 'your' console. Like 'Chrono Trigger'.

Thanks for the info! The game itself sounds right up my alley, I don't mind taking turns, though the no multiplayer feature is a little saddening.
I gotta check out itch.io, that sounds like a fun time, I'm not sure if our ancient family PC is able to handle too many downloads, but I love free stuff so I'm gonna get on that :D

Man, every time you comment it's very insightful, thank you :)

You're welcome. :)

If you haven't played it already, 'Day of the Tentacle'* is on the pricier side if you have to pay for it with pocket money, but...
- it will most likely run on your family's PC,
- can be played with multiple people at once (like all graphic adventures: "Can you try [this]...?")
- 'and' it is still listed on "best games of all time" lists to this day.

Your parents will probably enjoy it as well even if they have played it already and have lost access to their original copy, so you could split the purchasing cost. ;)

Sick!
Unfortunately, my parents are lame and don't play video games aside from Forza Horizons, but when I can get my hands on more cash (preferably by legal means) that's definitely gonna be high on my list of future purchases, I'm gonna be bookmarking that ;]
